Tecno Camon 15

The updates for the camera-centric Tecno phones are here – the Camon series. And this year’s release is a big upgrade from last year’s offering. The battery has been greatly boosted, the screen design now up to date with other midranges coming out this year and the camera now featuring all the four sensors that have come to be more present in pretty much every other device in the market. Is this the most complete device from Tecno? And if not, what we miss? Let’s find out.

Design and display of Tecno Camon 15

The new Tecno Camon 15 is truly a looker. It has a 6.6-inch IPS LCD screen with a punch-out hole display on the top left corner to accommodate the selfie camera. It important to reiterate that this is the best implementation of the front camera, as opposed to a teardrop notch or a moving part in the case of the pop-up camera. The screen acreage looks massive, with a screen to body ratio of 83.9%. The bezels look narrow and uniform, except at the bottom where a small chin lives. The phone is a plastic build, both frame and black, but it still has a premium feel, probably because of the polycarbonate material is a looker with the shimmering color designs that have been implemented in other phones too. We keep the 3.5mm jack but unfortunately are denied the joy of a type C connector, keeping the MicroUSB instead.

Performance and storage

The Tecno Camon 15 comes with the better entry-level Mediatek MT6762 Helio P22 chipset, which is more powerful than the A22 which has been used in other devices around this price range. The CPU is the popular 2.0 GHz Cortex A53 and a PowerVR GE8320 GPU. The memory onboard is finally on midrange grounds, featuring 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal mass storage, in addition to a dedicated microSDXC expandable storage slot. This SoC is bound to be the better performer in comparison with other Tecno devices. It will tackle easily day to day tasks and try to defend its fort with intensive tasks. Graphics have never really been heir strong point so one shouldn’t be overconfident about that.

Camera

The Tecno Camon 15 is of course modeled around the camera, so it might as well impress us. It comes it a quad-camera set up, a huge 48mp ide primary sensor, a 2mp ultra-wide, a 2mp depth sensor and a QVGA for those macro shots. The photos are great, well detailed, and sharp. The ultrawide is great for landscape or group photos, while the depth sensor adds character to the portrait edge detection and bokeh distance variance. It can shoot pretty usable 1080p video too at 30fps. The front-facing shooter is a capable 16mp selfie camera, shooting nice detailed pictures and HD video at 30fps.

Battery

The Tecno Camon 15 comes with a huge 5000 mAh non-removable battery which, all things considered, is easily a 2-day battery even for a power user. That means more time to consume content, use the great cameras, and some average gaming. We, unfortunately, we don’t get USB-C, a feature that is not very common in Tecno phones, so no fast charging. We have to rely on standard MicroUSB 10W charging that is very slow considering the huge battery. You can be sure it doesn’t go below 3 hours to top up.
